In July of 2018, Barclays Africa Group Limited officially changed its name to Absa Group Limited and announce that it had a laid down plan to rename its Barclays Bank subsidiaries in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia within the next two years, subject to approvals.
On the 10th of February 2020, Barclays Bank Ghana officially changed to Absa Bank Ghana Limited which was accompanied by a change of branding across all their online and offline communication. A visit to their new website https://www.absa.com.gh/ will prompt users to download their new updated Absa Mobile Banking Application on both Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
Mrs Abena Osei-Poku, Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana Limited is reported to have said, “Today, we begin a new chapter as Absa Bank Ghana Limited, while we retain our 100-year heritage of indelible commitment to Ghana’s economic growth. Our new brand demonstrates our commitment to building a bank that is centred on growth for our people through the provision of financial resources, services and opportunities that connect their dreams to possibilities,”
The change from Barclays to Absa poses no challenges to Barclays branded cards as they will still be operational until their designated date of expiry while customers are allowed to continue using their Barclays branded Chequebooks until 10th August after which, only Absa branded chequebooks would be allowed for purpose of withdrawal.
At a ceremony in Accra to unveil the new-look Barclays as Absa Bank Ghana Ltd, the Vice-President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, said Absa Bank would be operating in a much-improved economy since Ghana now had a major transformation and modernization agenda on the ground.
Absa Group Limited is listed on the JSE (Johannesburg Stock Exchange) and is one of Africa’s largest diversified financial services groups with a presence in 12 countries across the continent and around 41,000 employees.
The Group owns majority stakes in banks in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania (Barclays Bank in Tanzania and National Bank of Commerce), Uganda and Zambia. We also have representative offices in Namibia and Nigeria with an international presence in London operating as Absa Securities UK and pursuing a corporate strategy to procure licences in the United States.
