Government Launches ECG Mobile Application

H.E Bawumia, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana launches the ECG App

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, launched a mobile application to facilitate the purchase of prepaid electricity credits and postpaid bill payments by customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The app named ECG Power designed by in-house tech staff of the government utility firm is envisaged to make it easier for 2.8 million of its customer base to easily make payment for power any time of the day and instantly receive credits in terms of prepaid and for postpaid customers, it does, however, take a couple of days to reflect in the overall system.

Speaking at the launch, the vice president made the following statements:

“This is historic in the sense that the ECG for the first time in its long history is employing technology to tackle two major problems: first, improve on one of its critical functions of delivering power to its customers; and, second, address the more serious challenge of mobilizing its revenues from power delivery effectively and efficiently.”

“With this new application, customers can now buy electricity credit from the comfort of their homes, anytime and anywhere. What is more, you can now buy credit for distressed family members and for acquaintances.“

“The program of Government which we are consistently delivering to Ghanaians is to use technology to bring about a total transformation of the way we go about our daily tasks, the way we do business, and the way we govern ourselves.”

Prior to the launch, the application was available for users to download as this was part of the pilot testing procedure to which the vice president urged the firm to provide efficient application management to ensure total experience as no excuses for system failures will be tolerated. Especially the go-to term for most Ghanaian Public Sector workers “system is down.

The ECG Interface on Android

The Application can be downloaded from both the Google Play Store (Android) and Apple App Store (iOS). The application will require each user to create an account, add meter number(s) (more than one, if a user has more), top-up or pay bills using the various Mobile Money wallets (AirtelTigo, MTN, and Vodafone).

ECG USSD Interface

The services not only available to smartphone users but also non-smartphone users can access the same services through the USSD code *226#. All a user has to do is to dial the code and follow the prompts.

Digitization goes a long way to reduce a lot of inefficiency and corruption in government-run institutions and this is a perfect way to ensure proper revenue collection and lessons for the many other agencies to take a cue.
